Another week, another flat Another problem on my welcome mat Fallen on my face so many times It’s startin’ to feel like the spaces in my Brain don’t change, don’t learn a thing They stay the same, and maybe it means I’m psychologically distraught Doctor, doctor, what do I got? Flat tire blues You got no excuse You’re my malfunctioning machinery The blues Got it all to lose But I keep finding holes inside This rusted heart, when did it start? When did my judgment fall apart? Maybe I can find some kinda line And leave my troubles on the other side Gotta fix me up every week Raindrops fallin’ in through the leaks Patches keep on piling up Pick my fix, is it ever enough To change my fundamental thoughts? ‘Cause I suspect that’s where the problem Lies, inside, deep in my soul Keepin’ me from lettin’ go Of the flat tire blues You got no excuse You’re my malfunctioning machinery The blues Got it all to lose But I keep finding holes inside This rusted heart, when did it start? When did my judgment fall apart? Maybe I can find some kinda line And leave my troubles on the other side I’m pourin’ my poison from a paper cup Spittin’ my teeth and hangin’ upside down I got problems that I can’t solve Maybe you wanna bring ‘em all Everywhere I got and every time that I dream But I don’t wanna have the weight inside of me Holdin’ down my happiness until I could scream Takin’ away my peace Woah Flat tire blues You got no excuse You’re my malfunctioning machinery The blues And I’m tellin’ you You gotta let go Let go Of the flat tire blues You got no excuse You’re my malfunctioning machinery The blues Got it all to lose But I keep finding holes inside This rusted heart, when did it start? When did my judgment fall apart? Maybe I can find some kinda line And leave my troubles on the other side

My last girlfriend was a tiger trap It took a while but I escaped at last I think that there's a lesson here But freedom after a couple years Where kisses come like dinner rolls You can't stop them, man, so being alone Is worrying, please appreciate The situation you create When you say that I'm the kind of guy You could picture with you when you fly A hot air balloon through the stratosphere I could love you but you've made it clear You're not interested in going out, Getting locked up or being tied down And I must admit you've got a point, I shouldn't be eager to rejoin The club Of those who fuck around with love La la, let's pretend we never fell in love La la, being friends is more than enough If anyone asks, I'll lie and say I learned my lesson at last But let me know if your heart's ever up for grabs I love it when you hold my hand at the grocery store Kiss me when you're pickin' chicken from the freezer door But like a tongue twister tied into a Gordian knot Alexander can't decide whether he has a shot Of holdin' to your heels and you blow around the globe Should I circumvent the sentiment and let you go Cause I said it before I should be sick of you by now I'm still surprised that we're working out Well thinking about it's keeping me up I'm writing songs just to spill my guts That I don't wanna foil your escape attempts But I don't want to be reduced to wonder where you went And we both swear that we're aware that where the situation ends, If you'd care to observe, shows alarming trends, I'm not the first to be the last to want to see you go But sometimes a voice inside screams, oh god no, Don't leave Maybe that comes off a bit extreme Maybe I'm disinclined to see The opportunities Gained when we both recognize our Paths might leave a different kind of Footprint on the trail we go down Cause maybe mine just winds around There's good decisions bad depictions of a show I didn't catch the cast so I don't honestly know If we're allowed to make it big or if we go with the flow It'll crash us on the boulders you can see down below So I'm bewildered, should I chill or should I let you know Every minute away from you goes too slow La la let's pretend we never fell in love You know diggin' in is bringing nothin but Muddy foot prints from the rocky rut And four words that describe why we're keeping alive This little dream made of paper mâché are my line And thus: Don't give up us La la, let's pretend we never fell in love La la, being friends is more than enough If anyone asks, I'll lie and say I learned my at last But let me know if your heart's ever up for grabs

You claim you're thankful To have a voice at all But tell me what happens Every time you fall Oh it's gone, it's lost, it didn't last that long Please show me the smile you've hidden inside a song Do you recognize Yourself weathered from your storms Were you surprised To find you had no supports But it's gone, it's lost, it didn't take that long For you to hide your eyes when the tempest got too strong So now tell me, how long till it took you down Remember a structure, roots deep in the ground So now dry your eyes We're the bricks you wouldn't use You've never lost us Not matter what you chose to choose. There's an anchor In the rocks where we've settled down An old manger is the structure you've finally found

Hello Sphinx 03:49
You said what am I? I'm warm and then I'm cold And there's that look in your eye They wrote stories about years ago I don't wanna get this wrong But do you know what's at stake? A disguise you've worn so long You can't remember which one's fake Why you acting like you're made of stone 'Cause if I were medusa, I think I would have known It's a little scary how your fangs don't show And inscrutable is written all over your face Cause no matter what the riddle is, your answer's no I got two legs right now But where do your four fit in Cause I don't wanna have any doubts When your mouth's open Identify your nature are you friend or foe I don't wanna see this the wrong way It doesn't help that everything you write is written in code You play a dangerous game Why you acting like you're made of stone 'Cause if I were medusa, I think I would have known It's a little scary how your fangs don't show And inscrutable is written all over your face Cause no matter what the riddle is, your answer's no Well hello sphinx, how you doing today? Recently I been thinking about your games You give me three guesses but it always ends the same If you're guarding your heart, there's gotta be another way Why you acting like you're made of stone 'Cause if I were medusa, I think I would have known It's a little scary how your fangs don't show And inscrutable is written all over your face Cause no matter what the riddle is, the answer's Stop acting like you're made of stone Keep on following this road, you'll end up as a statue in Rome Bear your fangs and let the whole world know This is one sphinx with her heart on her sleeve And no matter what the riddle is, you're bound to grow

Hold on to that unbrella you're treatin' Like it means something to ya when it isn't even cloudy 'Cause when the clouds come out I know what they'll say: People down there you'd best take cover And everywhere they'll need another sun But I think I know where I can get one I don't really want to sit inside and watch the raindrops on the kitchen window Maybe the grass needs the rain and that's fine but I'd rather spend the day with you Everything's better when you've escaped the confines of a cumulonimbus Stumbing blindly into your embrace, the sun, the sun's got nothing on you Look out, it's a solar competition And I can't look away as I near my ignition point What's a star like you doing in a joint like this? You're more cut out for celestial places If I'm falling for you then doesn't that make this gravity That brings together you and me? I don't really want to sit inside and watch the raindrops on the kitchen window Maybe the grass needs the rain and that's fine but I'd rather spend the day with you Everything's better when you've escaped the confines of a cumulonimbus Stumbing blindly into your embrace, the sun, the sun's got nothing on you Nothin' on you baby, nothin' on you Nothin' on you baby, nothin' on you The sun's got nothing on you

See You 03:12
I've gotta wade through the lost and found Until the sun comes up, until the sun comes up I know you're somewhere in this town Why do I keep this up, why do I keep this up? And I have never been lonely Or admitted to myself I have a one and only But do you keep me on your shelf I wonder When the city spins around Do you think of me, do you think of me I've got memories all around But will I ever see, will I ever see And I have never been lonely Or admitted to myself I have a one and only But do you keep me on your shelf I wonder And when I think I've seen a ghost That's when you appear, that's when you appear All I want is you to hold me close And whisper in my ear, whisper in my ear And I have never been lonely Or admitted to myself I have a one and only But do you keep me on your shelf I wonder

Grow 04:14
Castles of sand and sidewalk chalk Trees we climbed so high They all fade into the distance Like a long lost lullaby I suppose in prose it'd be alright To explain away my fears But in reality it's different When you can't stop the years Because the earth keeps on revolving And it's not really solving anything And if the attitude's contagious Then I'll rewrite the pages from the start We rode in a pirate ship And sailed the seven seas The earth would not stop shaking When you looked at me I won't let you go, even though we grow Beanstalk through the clouds I can't stand the speed we dance to The rhythm's way too loud Because the earth keeps on revolving And it's not really solving anything And if the attitude's contagious Then I'll rewrite the pages from the start Lost in the eye of a storm Feeling cold I'm feelin' warm No way out, no turning back Drowning in sand going down the tracks No no no Woah, don't wanna grow Woah, don't wanna grow Woah, don't wanna grow Woah, don't wanna grow

about

Moving away from the electric guitar I grew up with, I wanted this album to concentrate on songs I wrote with just my acoustic. The guitar's got a good 20 or 30 years on me, so I feel like I can learn a lot from it.

I recorded this entire album on my iPad using apple's garageband app. Except for Hello Sphinx, all the guitars and vocals were recorded through the iPad's built-in mic also. It's a surprisingly nice piece of machinery.
