lyrics

I walked through chapter one back to our old house
Just east of where the introduction had been entered
There was dust on every sentence, every half-forgotten phrase
Trying to prolong the prologue never works

It was october when I auditioned to play protagonist
A book club hero trying to make my motivation last
But it's lonely work chasing through the plot, looking through scraps of prose
Hoping that you're just behind the next paragraph

We aren't on the same page
I think you're a chapter or two ahead
Perhaps you've already read through the ending
But give me some cliff notes or something, dear,
Because my character seems dead
All I really need is a summary
Of what you've been reading

At first I thought we lived our lives in Shakespeare
But starcrossed lovers never give up so easily
So I turned towards Edgar Allen Poe when I started to catch on
That this wasn't gonna be a comedy

'Cause there's a tear in every other punctuation mark
Every paragraph is staring out a hole in your heart
We were bleeding through the keys when we were setting the words on the page
All along I thought that this was gonna be a trilogy
But I was wrong when I was thinking that the character was me
Epilogues or epitaphs are all that we read inside our tragedy

We aren't on the same page
I think you're a chapter or two ahead
Perhaps you've already read through the ending
But give me some cliff notes or something, dear,
Because my character feels dead
All I really need is a summary
Of what you've been reading
What you've been reading
What you've been reading
What you've been reading
Oh

So I decided that I'd start my own book club
We'd read love letters to loves that were lost and long gone
And we won't lament for an envelope or postage stamp at all
Because for every heart that breaks, you can write a song

Darling, we aren't on the same page
I think you're a chapter or two ahead
Perhaps you've already read through the ending
But as for me, I think I'm only on chapter five
I'll keep writing 'cause I'm fighting to keep my love alive
And if you ever turn a page and lose a love
Then you can join my book club
You can join my book club
Join my book club
